Nonoxynol-9 Advisory
At SafeSense, we follow the latest news and developments in the sexual health
field. Currently, there is discussion surrounding the use of nonoxynol-9 (N-9),
the active ingredient in all spermicides in the U.S.
Contrary to previously held beliefs recent studies have shown that
nonoxynol-9 does not provide protection against STIs
or HIV, and that in some cases,
it may actually cause irritation and increase the risk of transmission.
Moreover, according to the Centers for Disease Control, condoms lubricated
with spermicides are no more effective than other lubricated condoms
in protecting against the transmission of HIV and other STIs. Distribution
of previously purchased condoms lubricated with N-9 spermicide should
continue, provided the condoms have not passed their expiration date.
However, purchase of any additional condoms lubricated with the spermicide
N-9 is not recommended because spermicide-coated condoms cost more,
have a shorter shelf life than other lubricated condoms, and have been
associated with urinary tract infection in young women.
Some manufacturers have discontinued or are gradually phasing out use of
N-9 in their products. SafeSense continues to carry a selection of these products
for our customers who prefer spermicidally treated condoms and lubricants,
however, we recommend use of products that do not contain N-9. We encourage
customers to educate themselves about this important issue and provide sources
for additional information in the N-9 Resources
page of our Education & Information
section.
